There are various different voluntary roles in SARDA IN

Dog’s‘body’ (DB)

A dog’s‘body’ is a person that hides for the dogs to find during training. Without ‘bodies’ the dogs cannot train.If you would like to become a vital and valued member of our team here are the following qualities required:-

You must love dogs

Love the hills and walking in the hills

Have a reasonable level of fitness

Suitable outdoor clothing

Be happy to hide on a mountainside in all types of weather

Previous hillwalking experience preferred

Be available to take part in fundraising and other events

 

Trainee Mountain Search Dog Handler (TMSDH)

Trainee SARDA IN dog handlers will spendapproximately 2 years training their dog (up to 7 days a week) to become qualified to novice grade. It takes a lot of hard work and a considerable amount of time and dedication. If you have these qualities we require the following:-

You must own your own dog (under 4 years old) or be interested in acquiring a pup to train

You are required to volunteer as a dog’s‘body’ for at least 6 months before training can commence

An acceptance test must be carried out to ensure the dog is suitable for training

Hold a REC Level 3 First Aid Certificate (at own expense) before qualifying at novice grade

Be available to take part in fundraising and other events

You also must have at least ONE of the following (must be obtained before dog training can commence and at own expense) :-

  • Hold Mountain Leader Award (summer) or above or be in the process of completing it
  • Be a member of a Mountain Rescue Team
  • Be prepared to undertake SARDA IN Mountain Skills Course run by Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, Bryansford

N.B All trainee dog handlers MUST complete novice grade within a 2 year period

 

Operational Mountain Support Member (OMSM)

This is a member who canalso be called upon to assist dog handlers on call outs 24/7 in the areas of navigation and communication and many other aspects. Requirements are as follows:-

Hold a REC Level 3 First Aid Certificate

Be available to take part in fundraising and other events

You also must have at least ONE of the following:

  • Hold Mountain Leader Award (summer) or above
  • Be a member of a Mountain Rescue Team
  • Hold a SARDA IN Mountain Skills Course run by Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, Bryansford (at own expense)

 

Trainee Lowland Search Dog Handler(TLSDH)

 Trainee SARDA IN dog handlers will spend approximately 2 years training their dog (up to 7 days a week) to become qualified to novice grade. It takes a lot of hard work and a considerable amount of time and dedication. If you have these qualities we require the following:-

This is a member who can also be called upon to assist on call outs 24/7 regarding navigation, communication, assisting the dog handler and many other aspects. Requirements are as follows:–

Hold a REC Level 3 First Aid Certificate (at own expense)

Be available to take part in fundraising and other events

You must also hold ONE of the following:-

  • SARDA IN Lowland Skills Course run by Tollymore National Outdoor Centre(at own expense)
  • Lowland Leader Award (at own expense)
