Drowned Victim Search Dogs

SARDA (IN) has secured the unique distinction, of being the first SARDA group to develop a system for training the drowned victim search dog. Training Officer Neil has seen service with the Royal Navy and later, was a crew member in the RNLI, so he is very familiar with the sea and with boats. He has worked very closely with John Sjoberg, an ex-Swedish Special Forces officer, to develop the DVSD course

They spent almost 20 years, perfecting a technique for teaching dogs to detect persons beneath the water, and then to deploy them on active searches with an eventual body location accuracy of some 10metres from a placed marker buoy. They have also worked closely on producing a method for selecting the right type of dog for this work. They have extended this to then building a training strategy for the dog, in what they would contend, is probably, the most difficult of all the search dog disciplines. e most difficult of all the search dog disciplines.
