Mountain Rescue Search Dogs

SARDA (IN) has 2 qualified dogs to assist Mountain Rescue Teams in the search for missing persons in remote areas. Our mountain search dog handlers are Alan Black with Full Search Dog Glen and John Binns with Novice Search Dog Jody. The training involved in becoming a qualified Mountain Search Dog and Handler can be quite arduous. It can take anywhere up to 2 years to qualified as a Novice Search Dog and Handler at which stage the search dog team is eligible to be called out by any Mountain Rescue team to assist in search incidents.

After a further years training the dog team are put through a further Assessment which will then see them qualified as Full Search Dog standard. A wide range of dog breeds are used as search dogs with some of the most popular breeds being Border Collie, Labrador, German Sheppard. Indeed cross breeds from any hunting and/or working strain of dog should have the high work and play drive needed to develop through the mountain search dog stages.
